Me again. Today I’m here to discuss a different way to edit those pictures that we so often love to play with in Photoshop.
Now, we use Photoshop for a number of fantastic things. We can use it to adjust the color scheme on a photo, to fool our friends that we actually are walking the red carpet with celebrities like Beyoncé and even to get rid of pimples from our always attractive school portraits.
Photoshop is great and all but today we’re going to talk about a different way to potentially edit your photos, simply using that beautiful keyboard we often take for granted.
That’s right, today we are going to discuss making pictures with our keyboards. Now I’m not talking about those fancy pictures you sometimes see on the internet where you can find a picture of a dog made by someone going into Word and typing dog dog dog do dog dog dog in the shape of a dog (not that much talent over here unfortunately), I’m talking about actually going into an image and breaking down the code that’s there in order to change the image.
Now before I start explaining how to break code to get what you want, let’s watch this video to figure what exactly code is.
So with code we are able to manipulate exactly what a computer is able to do. Programmers are very powerful people because they are able to control the limitations of what the users of what they are creating can do.
Which brings us to our discussion today. How can we manipulate code to change the images we see online and what will happen to those images?
It’s actually fairly easy! If you have a mac, you can simply change an image’s file format to a .txt and open it in a simple text editor (TextEdit) to view the code of the image. Then you can add things to the code, delete things and change parts of it to other things. There’s no real good way to teach you how to do this without just playing around with it to see what the effects are. After you’re done, change that photo back to the original format and hope that you didn’t break it enough that it won’t open anymore! If it opens you should get an image that is known as Glitch Art.
Although Glitch Art may seem a bit hard on the eyes to begin with, it is actually gaining popularity as an art form. A recent example of it appearing in pop culture is in the artwork for Iggy Azalea’s latest single.
The rise of Glitch Art appearing in pop culture is probably thanks to it’s not so distant relative Dubstep gaining popularity in recent years. Dubstep can be considered glitch music because it takes a variety of different noises and manipulates and breaks them into music.
